Moser Baer's German facility by year-end

Moumita Bakshi

New Delhi , May 11

MOSER Baer India, an optical storage media manufacturer, today said it may look at mitigating geographical risks by building a new site either in India or an overseas low-cost location that has technology manufacturing prowess.

"When we look at customers they definitely are a bit concerned in terms of the current concentration we have in Noida region. We have five sites in Noida, but as we go forward we will look at how to mitigate some of these risks," Mr Ratul Puri, Executive Director of Moser Baer India, said here.

Asked how the company would mitigate the risks he said, "We will probably build a site either somewhere else in India or outside in a low-cost region which understands technology manufacturing... For instance Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand or Eastern Europe."

"We want to listen to our customers, we want to know what they want. But this particular issue is not in our top priority concerns, rather it is a medium term goal for us," he added.

He said that the company's proposed manufacturing facility in the eastern part of Germany would be ready by the end of this year. The company would be investing about $10 million in the new facility that would manufacture niche products in the storage media segment for the European markets.

Moser Baer, which develops and manufactures removable data storage media, had posted a 66.6 per cent dip in its net profit for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2005 to Rs 24.52 crore, primarily on account of an increase in polycarbonate prices.

Its total income increased to Rs 411.82 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2005 from Rs 369.97 crore in the previous year period. For the full year, it had registered a net profit of Rs 58.37 crore (Rs 324.43 crore).
