Kerala: MLAs' team to tour the Gulf

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A team of MLAs from the State will visit the Gulf countries to seek ways to secure the release of Keralites who have been languishing in jails and labour camps there.

The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, conveyed this to Mr Chandramohan Bhandari, Ambassador-designate to the UAE.

The Chief Minister told Mr Bhandari that some people have been confined to the camps for petty crimes like alcohol consumption and violation of road traffic rules. The Dubai Government is prepared to release such offenders. To facilitate their release, the Centre should speed up the procedures as also extend legal assistance to those who need it.

The Chief Minister also asked Mr Bhandari to establish contact with the industrial houses in the Gulf countries, which are associated with projects such as the Vallarpadam container terminal and Smart City.
