Six-member team begins study of Noyyal system

THE six-member expert team constituted by the Madras High Court to inspect the Noyyal river system in Coimbatore and Erode districts - to assess the damage caused by the effluent discharge from the knitwear industry at Tirupur - commenced their field study today.
The team members consisting of environmental scientists and water experts held a preliminary meeting with the officials of the State PWD and the Pollution Control Board at the Collectorate and then left to inspect the Noyyal river course, including the Orathupalayam check dam in nearby Erode district.
The team includes Dr K. Danabal, environmental scientist and Managing Director of EPIC in India, Dr S. Sundaramurthi, environmental engineer, and Dr R. Sakthivadivelu, of the International Water Management Institute.
The team was constituted in the light of the hearing of cases relating to the effluent discharged into the Noyyal river by the Tirupur-based hosiery wet processing industries.
It has been asked to conduct on-the-spot inspection of the Noyyal area and submit a detailed report to the court to be readied before the next hearing of the case scheduled for May 23.
According to official sources, the team is expected to be on tour in the Noyyal river system till May 14.
It is scheduled to meet farmers at Erode and also the hosiery industry representatives at Tirupur tomorrow.
