THE Centre plans to bail out power-starved Maharashtra. It has agreed to allocate around 1,200 MW of electricity from various Central power stations.
The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, gave an assurance to this effect to the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, who called on Dr Singh to discuss the short-term measures to address the power crisis faced by the State.
Mr Deshmukh told reporters that out of the power promised by the Centre, 300 MW would come from NTPC's Kawas project in Gujarat and 250 MW from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd's Tarapur nuclear power plant.
The Maharashtra Chief Minister, who was accompanied by the Power Minister, Mr Dilip Walse Patil, and the Cooperation Minister, Mr Patangrao Kadam, during the 40-minute meeting, said that short-term measures were the focus of today's interaction.
He said that he would have another meeting with the Prime Minister later on the long-term measures to tide over the power crisis, including the issue of idle Dabhol project.
The Centre has also agreed to Maharashtra's request to make available the coalmines at Bellora and Taklijena in Chandrapur district for power generation.
Maharashtra is facing a daily shortage of about 3,500 MW, with the Chief Minister saying that it would take much time to reach the level of zero load shedding.
