THE Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Wednesday made it clear that he was not in favour of a "heavy-handed approach" to tax enforcement.

He indicated that the tax department would place more emphasis on "information and intelligence" rather than search and seizures to achieve revenue goals.

"I don't believe in the search-and-seizure method at all. We are forced to resort to search and seizures in certain cases. Search and seizure belonged to the past. What we need is information and intelligence I think search and seizure can be replaced by information and intelligence," Mr Chidambaram said after launching the e-payment facility for excise and service tax here.

The Finance Ministry is looking at annual information returns , which will kick in from August.
