Railways IRCON Intl bags Rs 64-cr highway project in Nepal Mamuni Das
AFTER making tracks in Ethiopia, IRCON International Ltd, the construction arm of the Indian Railways, recently bagged a Rs 64-crore highway project in Nepal. The Government project includes a contract for construction of pavement and strengthening of the east-west highway from Belbari to Chauharwa. "The total value of the project, funded by the Asian Development Bank, is Rs 64 crore. Some 130 km of the work involves upgrading the existing road and for 10 km new alignment construction," said te IRCON Managing Director, Mr B. S. Kapur. The work is to be completed in 24 months.
In Ethiopia, IRCON is executing a project of upgradation of Dera - Mechara road for the Ethiopian Roads Authority. "Valued at about Rs 141 crore, the work is to be completed by February 2008. The project is funded by the International Development Association (IDA) and involves road upgradation for 56 km and construction of new alignment for 64 km. The work is being executed at high altitude and about 20 km involves mining and rock blasting," said Mr Kapur. In Bangladesh, IRCON has won a Rs 32-crore contract on modernisation of signalling and inter-locking system of 12 stations of the Sylhet - Akhaura section of the Bangladesh Railways. The work involves design, supply, installation and commissioning of microprocessor base signalling system to be completed in 18 months or by September 2006. The Dhaka-Sylhet road project would be completed soon. Another work to be completed by June is the widening and strengthening of the 45-km road at Sylhet including construction of bridges for the Bangladeshi Ministry of Communication, and the Roads and Highways Department. "This project is being executed as a joint venture with Islam Trading, a Bangladeshi company and the value of IRCON's portion of work is about Rs 67 crore," said Mr Kapur.
