BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, has launched `Data One Broadband' and online billing information services here on Tuesday to mark the 37th World Telecommunication Day.

Speaking on the occasion, the Principal General Manager of Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, Mr T.N. Sudhindrakumar, said that BSNL would launch Data One Broadband service in all taluk headquarters in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts this year.

The broadband service in the telecom district is being introduced at a cost of Rs 2.88 crore under the National Internet Backbone II of the Union Government.

BSNL, which can provide broadband service to 10,000 customers in the district with its existing facilities, plans to cover 6,000 customers this year.

Mr Sudhindrakumar said that 40 places in the district have exchange facility for providing this service.

Apart from high-speed Internet connectivity, `Data One' can provide other facilities such as video on demand, e-learning and telemedicine. Copper telephone pairs are being used to provide broadband service through Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology.

Mr Sudhindrakumar said that customers could access their latest telephone bills under the online billing information service.

Printouts of the bill can be produced for making payment at BSNL's customer service centres.

He said that three base terminal stations of CDMA WLL (wireless in local loop) are functioning in the district, and 12 more will be operational soon.

The Dakshina Kannada Telecom District has 74 towers for providing mobile telephone service and 60 more towers are expected in many rural centres.

The Mangalore Member of Parliament, Mr Sadananda Gowda, who launched the Data One Broadband service, said that most of the telecom service providers are urban centric.

They should extend their activities in rural areas also.

The Mangalore MLA, Mr Yogish Bhat, who launched the online billing information service, said that local hospitals should make use of the broadband technology to provide telemedicine facility to rural people.
