The Hindu Business Line : AMD to set up design centre in Bangalore

CHIP manufacturer AMD India Ltd has said that it is setting up a design centre in Bangalore and would invest about Rs 22 crore in the next three years for this purpose. This was announced by the company President, Mr Ajay Marathe, at the sidelines of a press conference on Tuesday.

"The centre will have substantial number of software engineers," he added.

AMD also launched its range of 64-bit, dual-core processors in the country on Tuesday. These include the AMD Opteron processors for server and workstations and the AMD Athlon processor for desktop users.

The new dual-core AMD Opteron processors deliver up to 90 per cent performance improvement for application servers over single-core AMD Opteron processor, Mr Marathe said.

AMD's customers who will be using the new Opteron processors include Sun Microsystems, HP, IBM, Wipro and HCL.

Only AMD can upgrade their server platforms with dual-core processors and continue running legacy 32-bit x86 applications as well as new 64-bit OS solutions.

"Multi-core processors exemplify AMD's vision to understand customers and deliver products that best meet their needs. AMD OEM partners can now have several inherent advantages over the competition ," said Mr Kevin Knox, Vice President, Commercial Business, AMD.
