Defence tech denial regime against India continues: PM

New Delhi , May 17

INDIA, faced with bilateral and multilateral denial of technologies, needs to make maximum use of its indigenous talents and capabilities for developing defence technologies. This was stated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, while addressing the National Technology Day organised by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) here on Tuesday.

"I emphasise the need for the maximum possible use of our own talent and capabilities because bilateral and multilateral technology denial regimes targeting India still remain. Such regimes are contrary to the logic of globalisation and are increasingly an anachronism from the past," he said.

The Prime Minister said that the higher the indigenous content of India's weapon systems, the greater would be the country's confidence that the autonomy of national decision-making would not be affected in a crisis.

A self-reliant military industrial complex is therefore essential for the country to maintain strategic autonomy, he said.

The private sector would be more critical in defence endeavours in the future, Dr Singh said.
