Natural Calamities TN: World Bank-aided project launched for tsunami-hit Our Bureau
Chennai , May 18 THE Tamil Nadu Government has launched a World Bank-assisted project for the tsunami affected - the Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project. According to an official press release, the Rs 1,852.74-crore project includes five components - Rs 1,551.40 crore for housing reconstruction, Rs 122.2 crore for restoration of livelihood, Rs 85.41 crore for repair and reconstruction of infrastructure, Rs 41.17 crore for technical training and Rs 52.56 crore for implementation support. The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, unveiled a plaque signifying the launch of the project in the presence of a team from the World Bank led by Mr Michael F. Carter, Country Director, India, World Bank. Ms Jayalalithaa thanked the World Bank for the sanction of three projects: the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project ($111 million; Rs 483 crore), the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project-III ($300 million; Rs 1,305 crore) and the Tamil Nadu Empowerment and Poverty Reduction Project ($180 million; Rs 783 crore). She sought the World Bank's support for the Water Resources Consolidation Project-II, which envisages modernisation of irrigation systems in the State, and the Tamil Nadu Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project, which has been finalised.
