Mr K. Padmanabhan, Director, Teledata Informatics Ltd, and Mr Bjorgulf Haukelid, Vice-President, DNV , Norway, addressing a press conference in the Capital on Wednesday. Kamal Narang
New Delhi , May 18 TARGETING the huge demand for qualified shipping superintendents, Teledata Informatics and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) have tied up to launch an e-learning course and certification programme for ship superintendents. "The market scope is immense and we expect a turnover of $15 million every year," said Mr K. Padmanabhan, Director, Teledata Informatics. The course, along with certification, will cost $5,200. "The course will cost $4,000, which would accrue to Teledata. Additionally, the cost of examination and certification would be $1,200 that would accrue to DNV," said Mr Padmanabhan. "We will start marketing the product jointly from July to the shipping companies and aspiring superintendents worldwide," he said. Together, the companies have invested about $6 million till date on the project with Teledata spending $5 million and DNV the rest. "With increasing sophistication of ships and the growing complexities of ship operations, competencies of staff in key positions are decisive for safe operations. The course will equip ship superintendents with the skills necessary for efficient operations," Mr Padmanabhan added. "In response to industry concerns over lack of a unified competence benchmark for superintendents and electrical officers, DNV has, through experts, developed globally applicable competence standards covering all significant responsibilities," DNV Vice-President, Mr Bjorgulf Haukelid, said. The e-learning programmes will carry a DNV notation, indicating the quality guaranteed by the DNV, similar to the standard adhered to while building a quality ship, he added. Mr Padmanabhan said globally the figure for ship superintendents was around four lakh and Teledata was looking at capturing 10 per cent of this market in the first year. The e-learning course can be done from any part of the world. "Two shipping firms, including Anglo Eastern, have agreed to review our offering and we are sure they will use it," Mr Padmanabhan added. Pointing out that this is the first e-learning certification course for superintendents, he said they might develop such products for other segments such as the Coast Guard, the Navy and ports.
