Education Hyderabad varsity gets Rs 40 cr for research Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 18 THE University of Hyderabad (UoH) has obtained Rs 40-crore funding for about 160 projects in a wide range of research areas during the last one year, according to its Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kota Harinarayana. The research and development (R&D) project funding for 92 projects under investigation of the university faculty was Rs 15 crore in the year 2000. In addition to this, the university, rated among the top five in the country, has earned Rs 1.25 crore in the form of consultancy agreements, he said in a report. The university has attracted R&D project funding from national agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), among others. Among the new initiatives, the university would set up four centres in the disciplines of High Energy Materials, Earth and Space Sciences, Nano-Sciences and Technology and Cognitive Sciences and Complex Systems Engineering Design. The university's Department's of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics have been selected by the DST from among 1,500 claimants in a national competition for Level II grants under the "Fund for Improvement of Infrastructure in Science and Technology (FIST)". The Department of Biotechnology has been rated as the topmost in the country among teaching institutions. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also selected it as one of the five universities with potential for excellence. Accordingly, the UoH qualifies for special development grants. The UGC has sanctioned a grant of Rs 30 crore to pursue and promote Interface Studies and Research in particular, the report said. The University has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Assam University to undertake joint research programmes of mutual interest by obtaining funds from various organisations.
