Chennai , May 18

THE Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) is installing wind curtains along the harbour's beachfront to prevent wind carrying coal dust into the city.

It plans to install the curtains made of ultraviolet resistant fabric over 1.5 km to the east of the coal terminal, according to Mr K. Suresh, Chairman, ChPT.

According to him, the port trust will spend Rs 37 lakh on the wind curtain, which can act as a shield to control the velocity of the wind by 25 per cent. The port trust is also installing the curtain at the iron ore terminal. A similar curtain has been tried at Kobe, Japan, he said.

The port trust has initiated a series of anti-pollution measures, including sprinkling water on the roads, on coal heaps and reducing their height. Despite moving out most of the coal meant for the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to Ennore port, the Chennai port continues to handle coal meant for power stations of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and to private firms such as India Cements, Mr Suresh said.

During fiscal 2004-05, the port handled 1.99 million tonnes of thermal coal and 5.51 million tonnes of coking coal.
