Shipping New Mangalore port targets 50-mt traffic in five years Our Bureau
Mangalore , May 18 NEW Mangalore port, which handled 33.89 million tonnes (mt) of traffic during 2004-05, aims at 50-mt traffic in five years. Addressing the members of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), Mangalore-Manipal chapter, the Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), Mr P. Tamilvanan, said NMPT is poised for growth in the coming years. He said it is possible to achieve the 50-mt traffic, as many development projects are coming up in the region. Added to this, some of the industries are increasing their capacities. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, which processed 11 mt of crude in the last fiscal over its rated capacity of 9.6 mt, is planning to upgrade the refinery capacity to 15 mt. The refinery's cargo will contribute significantly to the growth of the port. The port handled 5.58 mt of iron ore cargo during 2004-05 against 1.67 mt during the previous financial year. In view of the large volume of iron ore and coal cargo to be handled, NMPT has taken up the construction of a multi-purpose deep-draft berth. The berth with a draft of 14 metres can be extended up to 17 metres in future. The capacity of the berth will be 3 mt per annum. He said the early completion of Hassan-Mangalore railway line would help bring in more cargo, especially containers, from the hinterland. In fact, NMPT has contributed Rs 10 crore for the Hassan-Mangalore railway project. The port handled 1.36 lakh tonnes of container cargo during the last fiscal, a growth of 41.84 per cent. Mr Tamilvanan hoped Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's plans to set up an LNG terminal in Mangalore could contribute significantly to port's traffic. The port wants to develop dry dock and bunkering facilities. There are also plans to deepen and strengthen the existing berths, and to deepen the channel area. He said a Rs 2.05-crore proposal has been submitted to the Union Government for setting up a cruise terminal in the port. The port handled eight cruise ships last fiscal. The Chairman of PRSI's Mangalore-Manipal chapter, Mr B.R. Bhat, presided over the meeting.
