One year of UPA Government

The Prime Minister gave his government 60 per cent for its first year in power. He talked about progress in seven key areas of agriculture and rural development, infrastructure, education, health, urban renewal, water and creating a knowledge economy.

He also stressed on the Backward Regions Grant and initiatives for public-private partnership in the infrastructure sector. Dr Manmohan expects the government to perform better; the only proof of that will be when poverty is completely eradicated.

This calls for some unorthodox and lateral thinking on the part of those in power to ensure that benefits of progress and development reach the poorer sections of society.
