Kerala: State tourism awards

KERALA Tourism has announced the Kerala State Tourism Awards 2003-04 for the best performers in the travel and tourism sector.

Addressing a press conference in the city today, the Kerala Tourism Minister, Mr K.C. Venugopal, said two new awards — for the best hotel manager and the best tourism/ hotel management institute — have been introduced this year. While the award for the best manager has gone to Mr Sanjay Sharma of the Le Meridien Resort and Convention Centre in Kochi, the award for the tourism/ hotel management institute has gone to Naipunnya Institute of Management and Information Technology, Thrissur.

The awards committee has also announced two special awards for an innovative tourism project and the best tourism brochure, he said. Ms Raji Punoose, who runs a drift wood museum in Kumarakom has won the special award for an innovative project, while the Wayanad Tourism Organisation and the Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council have won the special award for the best brochure.

From this year, the recipients of five awards will also receive a prize worth Rs 10,000, the Minister said. The prize, which is a tour package worth Rs 10,000, will be given to those who win the awards for the most tourist-friendly taxi driver, best guide, best tourism policeman, best student coordinator of a tourism club and best teacher coordinator of a tourism club, he added.

According to a tourism official, the name of the winner of the G.V. Raja award for lifetime achievement in tourism will be announced very soon. All the awards will be distributed at a ceremony to be held in Thiruvananthapuram in June, Mr Venugopal said.
