Kerala farm workers' stir called off

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The two-day strike by farm workers has been called off following conciliatory talks chaired held here on Thursday by the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy.

Among those who took part in the talks were the Finance Minister, Mr Vakkom Purushothaman; the Labour Minister, Mr Babu Divakaran; the Leader of Opposition, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, and leaders of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union.

As per the terms of agreement, one instalment (three months' dues) of the farm workers' pension will be paid immediately. Another instalment will be disbursed later to coincide with the impending Onam season.

Decision on 5,000 applications seeking assistance for marriage will be taken before Onam. Scope for budgetary allocation for the Government's share in the farm workers welfare fund will also be explored.
