Agricultural Policy Agri-Biz & Commodities - Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables CCEA okays horticulture mission launch Our Bureau
New Delhi , May 19 THE Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the launch of a national horticulture mission (NHM) with an outlay of Rs 2,300 crore for the remaining period of the Tenth Plan. NHM, which would be a Centrally-sponsored scheme under the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, is expected to promote horticulture sector through regionally differentiated strategies. An in-principle approval for continuing the mission during the Eleventh Plan was also granted by the CCEA. Further, a mission director of the level of Joint Secretary would be appointed from within the Government or otherwise. Briefing presspersons about the NHM, the Finance Minister, Mr Chidambaram, said that about 33 lakh hectares of additional area would be brought under horticultural crops and 16 lakh hectares of senile plantation would be rejuvenated by the end of the Eleventh Plan.
