New Delhi , May 19

THE Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of the National Statistical Commission.

"Immediately the commission would be set up by a Government resolution and eventually within one year replaced by law," the Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, told reporters here on Wednesday.

Pointing out that the Dr Rangarajan Committee had recommended the setting up of the National Statistical Commission, Mr Chidambaram said the Chief Statistician of India, a post to be created, would be the Secretary to the Commission.

The Cabinet also gave its approval for a National Map policy brought out by the Department of Science and Technology. Under this policy, there would be two series of maps — defence series maps (DSMs) and open series maps (OSMs). The Finance Minister said that the OSMs would be available to the public through a process of registration and users can do value addition to the OSM maps.

The Survey of India has been given the responsibility for releasing the two series of maps, Mr Chidambaram said.

The OSMs are to be derived from national digital topographical database that will be created by the Survey of India.

The Union Cabinet also gave ex-post facto approval for moving the official amendments to the Central Excise Tariff (Amendment) Bill 2004.
