Surgeon sets a `hearty' record

Hyderabad , May 20

THE Chief Cardiologist at Apollo Hospitals, Dr Vijay Dikshit, has achieved a rare distinction of performing 1,000 beating heart surgeries with 99.1 per cent success rate.

Speaking to newspersons today, Dr Dikshit said: "A major cause of complications in coronary artery bypass surgery can be cardio-pulmonary bypass. With off-pump surgery procedure, there is significant alteration in the post-operative course of a patient and has minimised incidence of complications, apart from enabling the patient to get back to normal much sooner."

Beating heart surgery requires additional skill and expertise apart from technology. It necessitates very precise handling and stabilisation of the heart.

Technological advances and new types of operating equipment allow a surgeon to stabilise portions of the heart and bypass the blocked artery in a highly controlled operative environment, while the rest of the heart keeps pumping and circulating blood to the body.

Beating heart surgery provides advantages and can be performed under general anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia, the latter where the patient remains conscious.

This procedure helps in quicker recovery, reduces trauma to the patient, cuts risk of bleeding, stroke, and kidney failure, and is less expensive.
