Cochin Port Labour Union plea against port privatisation

Our Bureau

Kochi , May 23

THE Cochin Port Labour Union, affiliated to CITU, has urged the Union Government to desist from the proposed move to privatise all major ports in the country, including Kochi Port.

A resolution adopted at the union meeting here has decided to jointly resist privatisation of ports. As an affiliated union of Water Transport Workers Federation of India, CPLU also decided to participate in the joint struggle against privatisation, Mr B. Hamza, General Secretary, CPLU, said in a statement here.

The Union Government is under pressure from the governments of developed countries to privatise port infrastructure, he alleged.

Major maritime nations do not allow controlling stake for private capital in ports as shipping and port services play crucial role in international trade and in ensuring national security, he said.

The strategy of developed countries is to control the shipping and ports of developing countries as well. That is why dominant multinational companies are encouraged to own port assets abroad, he added.
