Dr Krishnan Nair on WHO panel

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , May 23

LEADING oncologist Dr M. Krishnan Nair has been nominated to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Cancer Control Advisory Committee.

Dr Nair, currently Director and Consultant Clinical Oncologist with the SUT Institute of Oncology here, represents India on the 14-member committee. Other member countries include the US, Canada, Brazil, Pakistan, France, Japan and China.

Constitution of the committee is in accordance with the approval of the Resolution on Cancer Prevention and Control by the Executive Board of the WHO, Dr Nair said here.

The WHO Director-General has since approved the development of various activities for cancer prevention and control. These activities include a charting out of a global cancer control strategy, preparation of a report on global cancer control and the establishment of groups to support these activities — a WHO Cancer Steering group, a Cancer Technical Group, a WHO Cancer Network of Partners and the Cancer Advisory Committee to the Director-General.

Cancer is an emerging public health problem in India and other developing countries, Dr Nair said. The rate of incidence might be relatively low in these countries right now, but growing population, rapid changes in lifestyles and increase in life expectancy could be extrapolated to gauge the substantial growth in the number of the afflicted.
