Ecology fears over Sethu project allayed

Mumbai , May 23

THE Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, Mr D.T. Joseph, has allayed fears that the Rs 2,427-crore Sethusamudram canal project would pose some environmental problems.

"There will be no basic damage to any environment. In fact, the environmental clearance to the project has come with some conditions, which we will strictly adhere to. We will take care of the water and coral reef along the coasts of India and Sri Lanka," he told Business Line.

Mr Joseph said he had explained the environmental safeguards being taken for the project to a team from Sri Lanka recently.

He said the Ministry plans to set up a Disaster Recovery Cell to coordinate relief and rescue operations during disasters involving Indian ships in the high seas.
