Hyderabad, May 23

THE Andhra Pradesh Government plans to set up an independent body - Overseas Manpower Corporation - to help youth find jobs abroad.

The State Minister for Labour and Employment, Mr G. Vinod, told newspersons on Monday that the corporation would be operational by next month.

It will help registered job seekers and serve as a service provider. Initially, the focus will be on the West Asia market, while efforts are on to make arrangements with various governments.

Mr Vinod said, "As part of Government initiatives to help youth, we bring together MNCs having bulk requirements for professional and skilled personnel by hosting recruitment camps. This would be through employment exchanges hosting job melas."

Giving an update on the labour department performance, Mr Vinod said, out of 1992 industrial disputes, 83 per cent (1651) were resolved during the year.

A significant issue relates to the lockout of Guntur-based Bajrang Jute Mills. This was resolved through mediation and helped about 3,000 employees, by saving on loss of man-days and crores of rupees in production loss.

Highlighting the Government's thrust on eradicating child labour, the minister said a major survey was conducted to identify child labour in cotton cultivation and Rs 24.43 lakh was released to bring them to mainstream.

The Government has issued preliminary notifications proposing to revise minimum rates of wages under the Minimum Wages Act in sericulture, tobacco beedi manufacturing, soft drinks and limestone kilns. A final notification will be issued in consultation with the AP Minimum Wages Advisory Board.

The State Government has taken up a proposal with the Centre to create a super-speciality hospital at Sanathnagar along with the upgradation of ESI Hospital at Ramanthapuram and Jeedimatla centres. The cost of the hospital is estimated at Rs 55-60 crore and will come up in a 13.5-acre site, said Mr Vinod.

About 23 lakh people have so far enrolled for employment, including 1.12 lakh this year.
