Disparity in airfares

While the drastic reduction in airfares resulting from increased flight frequency and competition between private airlines is indeed heartening, one wonders about the rationale behind the fixing of fares in various sectors.

While one can fly from Bangalore to Mumbai for Rs 3,000 for a distance of 1,100 km, a passenger has to shell out Rs 3,800 to fly from Bangalore to Cochin for a distance of 485 km!

Further, a passenger can fly from Kochi to Abu Dhabi for a little over Rs 3,200 by the no-frills national carrier `Air India Express'.

Such wide variations are baffling to many. Is it a case of cross-subsidy? It would be helpful is the respective airlines clarified the disparity in air fares.
