SSI CII-SR to initiate seven SME cluster projects this year Our Bureau
Mr R. ParasuRaman
Chennai , May 24 THE Confederation of Indian Industry-Southern Region intends to initiate seven new small and medium business cluster projects in 2005-06 at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Madurai and Coimbatore. These will be in addition to the three existing SME clusters at Ambattur in Chennai and Coimbatore, Mr R. ParasuRaman, Chairman, CII-SR, told presspersons here on Tuesday. CII's cluster projects aim at enhancing internal competitiveness of SMEs in terms of cost management, energy management and manufacturing excellence, he said. Mr ParasuRaman said that CII-SR would work with the Governments of Tamil Nadu and Kerala towards bringing in a VAT regime. He expressed fears that not bringing in VAT could erode the competitiveness of the State. He said that the implementation of VAT would anyway take place over a period of time and that it was only the fear of the unknown that was delaying it. He also said that CII-SR would initiate three more `young Indians' chapters at Pondicherry, Coimbatore and Mysore by April 2006. At present, there are YI chapters at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Cochin. At the YI chapters, boys and girls are trained in various fields such as electrical installation, plumbing, painting, hair-dressing and fashion design.
