Power Thermal plant trips; power crisis worsens in AP Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 24 BOILER tube leak in two units of the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS) today, forced the State Government to take them out of service, resulting in a significant dip in power availability. According to the Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTransco), the problem has caused a reduction of 420 MW. Already there is a loss of generation to the extent of 600 MW. With this forced outage, the power availability would drop by 1000 MW, while the demand has been on the increase. To meet the general shortage and the one caused by the present problem, the APTransco is overdrawing from the Central Generating Station and making efforts to purchase power from other States, it said in a press release. It is also augmenting from hydel generation during peak hour loads. The rectification work on Unit 2 at the VTPS has been taken up by the AP Generation Corporation (APGENCO) and is expected to be completed by tonight, improving the situation. The other unit is expected to be back in service tomorrow, the release added. The short supply of natural gas has impacted the supply from the gas power stations. Similarly, the Central Generating Station at Talcher Thermal Power Station was not generating at full capacity due to coal problem, thus reducing the availability to the State by another 120 MW. All these were putting pressure on the supply.
