Sargon scouts for global partners

Mamuni Das

New Delhi , May 24

SARGON Geosynthetics, a company in the area of ground engineering, is looking for international partners to bring in technology to market and manufacture geosynthetic products.

Sargon has supplied the geosynthetic material in the recently inaugurated Jaipur-Kishangarh expressway and had supervised the construction of reinforced soil walls for three flyovers between Jaipur and Kishangarh. "The company's share in revenue in the Jaipur-Kishangarh project was Rs 6 crore," said Mr Vikramjiet Roy, Managing Director of Sargon Geosynthetics.

"Benefit of using geosynthetics is that it increases the life of the road and decreases the cost of maintenance," he added.

Geosynthetics is a thin layer of synthetic material used for earth related projects and has a long design life, he explained. It is widely used in Europe, the US, South-East Asia and China in their road construction.

The matter is laid between the earth (sub-soil) and concrete to separate the two so that rain and other external pressures do not damage the road as fast as they otherwise would.

Demand for geosynthetics, "the use of which costs about one per cent of the total road building cost," is likely to go up in India following major projects lined up for the road sector. The company is looking at manufacturing options and about one year down the line may set up a plant based on the demand, he added.

"In case, one is using high-end geosynthetics, wherein the cost of the material is about 2-3 per cent of the total road building cost, then the depth of the material used in road can be reduced by about 20 per cent, which would then result in saving about 10 per cent of the road building cost," said Mr Roy.

Sargon, a company started two years ago, registered a turnover of Rs 7.5 crore in fiscal 2004-05, which was its first year of operations. "We look forward to register a turnover of at least Rs 15 crore this fiscal," he said. Other projects where the company is involved include constructing segmental block walls in Morbi and Khadi, Gujarat, with a project cost of Rs 40 lakh and Rs 50 lakh, respectively.
