THE Bombay High Court has granted Su-Raj Inter Gold Pvt Ltd six months to change its name in view of a petition filed by older and listed company, Su-Raj Diamonds and Jewellery Ltd.

During the hearing, the counsel for the defendants, Su-Raj Inter Gold, offered to change the name and sought six months' time. The petitioner company agreed.

Mr Justice D. K. Deshmukh, in his order, warned that in case the name was not changed, Su-Raj Diamond's request for a stay on the use of the name `Su-Raj' would get automatically granted.

Su-Raj Diamond had objected to Su-Raj Inter Gold using the name Su-Raj, so identical to the group's name.

Su-Raj Inter Gold had offered to change its name to `Suraj' but the petitioner company said that even that would infringe upon its rights.

The judge declined to go into the question whether the proposed new name `Suraj' really did so at that stage of hearing, but said in the order that in case Su-Raj Inter Gold's new name infringed on the rights of the Su-Raj Diamonds, the latter would be at liberty to approach the court for relief.

Su-Raj Diamond had demanded that Su-Raj Inter Gold pay Rs 10 crore by way of damages or the entire profit the latter had earned using the name `Su-Raj'.
