Infrastructure Land development crucial for promoting IT parks: Maran Our Bureau
Mr Dayanidhi Maran
Coimbatore , May 25 LAND development should precede promoting any information technology parks or the IT corridors , according to Mr Dayanidhi Maran, the Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology. He said that shortage of suitable land and high land costs were among the factors inhibiting the IT companies from investing in Chennai. The Minister said that Chennai was not able to attract IT investment the way it should have because of the infrastructural shortcomings and this was due to wrong policies adopted by the State Government. Securing sufficient lands should go first before promoting the IT park. In a scenario where the land cost itself ruled quite high in the range of Rs 3,000/Rs 4,000 per sq ft in places like Chennai, it would be but natural for the IT industry to show hesitancy in pitching their tent. Talking to newsmen here today, the Union Minister, however, felt that considering the infrastructural bottlenecks in the country's major IT centres, Tamil Nadu's tier II cities such as Coimbatore and Madurai can be improved for software technology parks. "Coimbatore credited with large number of engineering and technical institutes generating vast number of skilled labour should be a suitable destination for the IT industry. But Coimbatore-based entrepreneurs should discard their mindset from being manufacturing enterprises and take up knowledge enterprises. Mr Maran said that he had planned to visit to the US in the first week of next month to scout investments for Tamil Nadu from global chipmakers Intel, AMD and C-Gate as China and Vietnam were already vying to attract the Intel's investment into their countries. Mr Maran said that new investments of $850 million was likely in India's telecom and telecom-related industries this year.
