Kolkata , May 26

TATA Teleservices Ltd hopes to have a nationwide customer base of around 10 million by the end of the current fiscal. This is expected to help the company generate revenues between Rs 4,000 crore and Rs 5,000 crore, according to Mr Rajesh Puri, Chief Operating Officer, Eastern Hub, Tata Teleservices Ltd.

Currently, the company's countrywide customer base stands at over four million. Mr Puri was addressing a news conference held here on Thursday to outline Tata Teleservices' plans for the Eastern region. He said an investment of Rs 600 crore had been earmarked for the region, which comprises the telecom circles of Kolkata, West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Bihar. By the end of the current fiscal, the company hopes to have a customer base of one million in the Eastern region. Mr Puri said Tata Telservices has surpassed the one-lakh customer-mark in Kolkata within 100 days of the commercial launch of services here.

The average revenue per user — pre-paid and post-paid combined — has been pegged in the Rs 420-450 band. A break-even on earnings before interest, tax and amortization on operations is expected in the current fiscal.

He said the Rs 600 crore proposed to be invested would go towards installing an additional 350-400 cell sites to the existing 500 in the Eastern region. This would facilitate the extension of telecom services to 350 towns and cities from 80 at present.

The number of public telephone booths in the Eastern hub is slated to go up from 4,000 at present to 55,000 by the end of the current fiscal. The company's growth has been attributed to, among other business initiatives, its commitment to provide "honest and transparent telecom services."
