Foods & Food Processing Kolkata seeks Centre's nod to set up codex cell Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 26 , THE Department of Food Processing Industries and Horticulture of the West Bengal Government has sought the Centre's nod for setting up a codex cell in the State. The proposed cell will keep track of codex information, codex documents, will compile codex standards, codes of practices, and so on, to help food processing industries adopt total quality management and be competitive in the global market. A Codex Alimentarious Commission has been set up jointly by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to develop food standards to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade. Apart from defining various codes of hygiene, codex has lately developed Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) as an important parameter for food safety. Addressing a workshop on "Requirement of food safety, labelling, intellectual property rights (IPR) issues, for export development of agriculture and processed food products" here today, the West Bengal Minister for Food Processing and Horticulture, Mr Sailen Sarkar, said that the State Government was expecting the Centre's approval for its codex cell proposal.
