Bangalore , May 26

MARUTI Suzuki said on Thursday that the company and its vendors had invested a total of over Rs 440 crore in the development of its new car, Swift.

The company's marketing director, Mr Kinji Saito told newspersons that Maruti had invested around Rs 250 crore in the project and its vendors had invested around Rs 190 crore.

Mr Saito said even though Swift has over 8,000 bookings even before its launch, Maruti has not set a sales target. "It is a bit difficult to set a target right now but we expect to sell in large numbers," he said. In Japan, Swift, which was launched in November, 2004, sold over 30,000 cars in six months and around 5,000 in the first month of its launch.

"It will reposition the way Maruti Suzuki is perceived," Mr Saito said. He, however, ruled out any move to phase out models like Maruti 800 and Zen. Mr Saito said the company expects to draw customers from similar cars of other manufacturers. He said Swift's design and development has been influenced by Suzuki's sports motorbikes.
