With the completion of the apron construction work, four aircraft can be parked in the airport.

Mangalore , May 29

CONSTRUCTION of the second runway at Mangalore airport can be completed by December provided the local citizens cooperate with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in carrying out the construction work, according to the Director of Mangalore Airport, Mr M.R. Vasudeva.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new electrical and mechanical workshop at the airport on Saturday, he said that Rs 16 crore has been spent on the construction of the second runway and Rs 17 crore more is needed.

Land has been levelled for runway construction, and now it needs to be concreted.

He requested the local citizens to cooperate in acquiring the additional land required to make the runway operational.

Mr Vasudeva said that work on the apron construction would be over by June 15. With the completion of the work, four aircraft can be parked in the airport.

At present, only two aircraft can be parked in the airport's apron.

Both the apron and runway will have pavement classification number (PCN) of 54. The existing runway and apron, which have PCN of 20, are being upgraded to PCN of 54, he said.

Mr Vasudeva said that the Dubai-based International Passengers' Association has informed the airport authorities that three operators would like to avail themselves of night-landing facilities after the construction of second runway at the airport. During the last fiscal the airport recorded a growth of 19.7 per cent in passenger traffic and 25.4 per cent in cargo traffic.
