Red chillies procurement

MADURAI: The Tirunelveli district administration has made elaborate arrangements to procure red chillies from farmers to enable them get the right price for their produce. Red chilli is cultivated in about 1,424 hectares in the district.

According to the District Collector, Mr Atul Anand, the State Government has opened a procurement centre at the regulated market at Sankarankovil for the benefit of farmers. First quality samba variety would be paid Rs 2,300 per quintal and the second variety Rs 1,900. Similarly, the first quality `gundu' variety would be paid Rs 2,200 per quintal while the second variety Rs 1,800. However, farmers bringing the chilli to the procurement centre will have to get an application form from the Village Administration Officer and get it attested from him or the Assistant Horticulture Officer of the area.

Segregation of the produce based on quality, would be carried out by the Agriculture Officer.

Payment for the procured chillies would be made through cheques, on the spot, the sources said.
