The Hindu Business Line : Mining congress in Kolkata in Jan

THE Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI), the oldest institute of its kind in Asia, has decided to organise the first Asian Mining Congress coinciding with its proposed three-day international mining exhibition, to be held in the city from January 16 to 18 next year.

The objective would be to explore new frontiers in mining. The institute has said that the lack of awareness about the potential of the mineral sector among decision makers and even common people has affected the growth of this sector.

This despite the fact that the sector plays a vital role in meeting the energy requirements of the country.

It is against this backdrop that the international mining exhibition is being organised, the exhibition seeking to attract significant participation from within the country as well as overseas.

Altogether 800 delegates are expected to participate in the mining congress and about 20,000 visitors are expected to visit the exhibition, according to MGMI.
