Bengal calls meet on vehicles phase-out

Kolkata , May 29

THE West Bengal Government has convened a meeting of transport operators on June 9 to discuss threadbare issues pertaining to the proposed phasing out, from Kolkata, of commercial vehicles that have been registered prior to 1990.

Speaking at a function organised by The Calcutta Goods Transport Association here , the West Bengal's Minister for Transport, Mr Subhas Chakraborty, said the Government was keen on helping the transporters by way of tax concessions and requesting banks to offer soft loans to them for purchase of new vehicles, etc.

The transporters, on their part, said it would not be possible to stick to the deadline of December 31, by which time all commercial vehicles in Kolkata that have been registered prior to 1990 would have to be phased out. Besides, the inadequate availability of LNG and CNG outlets in Kolkata would greatly hinder efforts to convert to LNG and CNG.

The transporters said their further course of action would depend upon the outcome of the meeting.
