Madurai , May 30

THE Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, laid the foundation stone and inaugurated a project on the cereals, pulses and staples (CPS) milling cluster, at a function here.

The Minister said that many States are still not aware of the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS) started in 2003 by the Union Government and its importance and benefits under the public-private partnership initiative.

The scheme envisages a one-time subsidy of 75 per cent of the project cost of durable assets subject to a maximum of Rs 50 crore with the rest to be brought in by the stakeholders.

While a sum of Rs 90 crore was allotted for the scheme in 2003-04, a sum of Rs 500 crore was set apart during 2004-05.

While the milling cluster is the first in the State to be taken up, other clusters will be coming up at Tirupur, Chennai, Coimbatore and Ambur for textiles, auto components, foundry and leather respectively.

The Minister handed over a cheque for Rs 10 crore as the first instalment from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry towards the project to the Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Marketing Yard Ltd, Mr S. Rethinavelu, the special purpose vehicle formed for the execution of the project.

The project envisages setting up infrastructure facilities for the foodgrains based industries in and around Madurai.

Coming up in about 30 acres at a total outlay of Rs 39.96 crore at the Milagaranai village, the project is to be completed in 18 months.
