Power Opposition protest against load-shedding in Mumbai Our Bureau
Mumbai May 30 , DEMONSTRATIONS and `rasta roko' were held across Maharashtra by the BJP, in protest against the load-shedding in the State. In Wardha district, demonstrators attacked the local Maharashtra State Electricity Board office. The police detained State BJP president, Mr Nitin Gadkari, for leading the demonstrators in Nagpur. Former Deputy Chief Minister Mr Gopinath Munde was detained in Aurangabad. The agitation led by Mr Munde turned violent and the agitators pelted stones against Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses near Aurangabad. Mr Dilip Walse Patil, Energy Minster, speaking to the media in the Secretariat said that it was not appropriate on part of the opposition parties to create an atmosphere of terror. They are fully aware about the power situation in the State, he said. "This problem was not created overnight. It was due to lack of capacity building in the power sector for the last 10 years, of which BJP was in power for five years in the State. The problem of load-shedding will not be solved in one day as it will take time," Mr Patil said. Countering the allegations of opposition parties over the power purchase agreement (PPA) between private power companies and the state government, Mr Patil said that opposition parties must understand that the PPA cannot be signed unless the full financial disclosure of the power company is made public.
