Centre to focus on drinking water supply

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , May 30

KEEPING in view the worsening water crisis, the Centre has decided to focus on the availability, sustainability and quality of drinking water.

Worried over depleting groundwater levels, the Government has also decided to take up watershed programmes, according Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, Union Minister for Rural Development.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he said the Centre had doubled the grant to Rs 208 crore this year to Andhra Pradesh for augmenting drinking water supply.

Dr Singh was here to review with District Collectors the implementation of the National Food for Work Programme in the four Southern States.

Referring to Andhra Pradesh's request, he said the Centre is keen on providing quality water in all districts and not just in the districts where the Food for Work programme is in force. Citing the fluoride problem in Nalgonda district, he said officials had been directed to test water samples again.
