Infrastructure Fertiliser Ministry plans to set up mega industrial estates in coastal States Our Bureau
Mr Ram Vilas Paswan
Chennai , May 31 THE Union Ministry of Fertilisers and Chemicals is considering setting up of mega industrial estates in one or more coastal States. The Union Fertiliser Minister, Mr Ram Vilas Paswan, said that it has done a marketing study through a consultant, Dalal Mott McDonald, to study the prospects and location for a petrochemical-based industrial estate. Addressing a press conference here after inaugurating the corporate office of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology, Mr Paswan said the mega-industrial estate would involve setting up an `anchor industry' that would catalyse a large number of ancillary units. The study focuses on the global scenario of chemical products to identify potential areas for investments. The Ministry is willing to consider more than one such industrial estate, which will get special economic benefits, he said. Mr Ramesh Inder Singh, Joint Secretary in the Union Fertiliser Ministry, said that Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra have been identified as potential sites. After studying different areas of investment, the Ministry has concluded that petrochemical industries and allied chemicals offer the best investment opportunity. The State Governments have also evinced interest and Tamil Nadu has suggested two possible sites for the petrochemical park. Though the project is in the initial stages, the idea is to form a special purpose vehicle with majority contribution from the private sector. It would be in the public-private partnership mode and the State Governments could decide their level of participation.
