Banana crop destroyed

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: A sudden gale has caused extensive damage to the banana crop in Pudukottai district.

Crops across 600 acres have been destroyed and the loss is around Rs 1 crore, according to the Chairman of District Farmers Forum, Mr G. S. Dhanapathy. The farmers who cultivated the crop on a lease basis are the worst hit and most have not insured the crop, he added.

A delegation of farmers' representatives submitted a memorandum to the district collector, Mr R. Thiagarajan, seeking compensation for the loss.

Popular varieties grown in the district are Poovan, Nendran and Rastali.
