THE city-based Kenilworth Hotels group is exploring the possibility of setting up an Indian restaurant in Malaysia.
This follows the selection of The Kenilworth as the sole participant at an Indian Food Festival scheduled to be held at the City Bay View Hotel, Penang, Malaysia, between June 6-18.
Speaking to newspersons, Mr Raju Bhagat, Chairman of the group, said that with Malaysia emerging as a favourite destination for outbound Indian tourists, Indian cuisine was in demand on a "round-the-year basis with themes thrown in."
To cater to the Indian palate, it would be important for Indian food with its aroma and spices to be served to the gastronomic desires of the local residents as well.
The Indian Food Festival in Penang has been the result of initiatives taken by Jet Setters, the local agent responsible for selling Malaysia, and the Malaysian Tourism Board, among others.
Mr Bhagat said that the group, which has two properties located in Kolkata and Goa, would explore opportunities for setting up an Indian restaurant in Malaysia.
Typically, this would entail an investment of $0.5 million. The group is also open to the idea of tying up with hotels in Malaysia with a view to offering packages to inbound tourists from Malaysia and outbound tourists from India, he said.
