New Delhi , May 31

GAIL (India) Ltd will pick up a 10-per cent equity stake in the proposed 1,000-MW Doraha gas based power plant in the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB).

The plant is to be set up at Doraha, near Ludhiana. GAIL and PSEB recently signed a Heads of Agreement (HOA) for supply of 4.5 million standard cubic meters per day of natural gas for the proposed power project, a statement issued by GAIL states.

The project is likely to be commissioned by 2008-09 at an estimated cost of Rs 3,500 crore.

To meet the demands of the proposed power plant and other allied industrial, transport and domestic sectors along the line, GAIL is taking up extending its Dadri-Panipat gas pipeline to Ludhiana.

This will be the second power project in which GAIL will take equity participation. GAIL already has a 12 per cent stake in the 156-MW power plant at Hazira of Gujarat State Energy Generation Ltd.
