A month-long intensive anti-AIDS programme, `AASHA' (Anti-AIDS Sustainable and Holistic Action) will be launched on July 1 throughout the State.
This was one of the decisions taken during a review meeting held here on Tuesday between the Chief Minister, Dr Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and health and family welfare officials on HIV-related problems in the State.
The Government order (G.O.Ms.No.174) will be implemented for providing beds to AIDS patients by converting all TB hospitals in the State into HIV and TB hospitals.
"HIV/AIDS prevention programmes are incomplete without proper care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS. No person living with HIV/AIDS should be denied treatment in any Government hospital," the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister called for organising an AIDS awareness campaign involving Gram Sarpanches, self-help group (SHG) leaders, Rajiv Yuva Shakthi leaders, teachers NSS volunteers, Aganwadi workers, health workers and people living with HIV/AIDS.
Making a detailed presentation, the Principal Secretary, Medical and Health, Mr I. V. Subba Rao, said that Andhra Pradesh is one of the six States with a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. About 92 per cent of the infections are in the productive age group of 15 to 49 years, posing a major threat to the development of the State.
