Power Maharashtra to have special police stations to check power theft Our Bureau
Mumbai May 31 IN what could possibly become a trend-setter, Maharashtra will soon have six exclusive police stations and two courts to control rampant power theft in the State. The police personnel will work in tandem with the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) officials, said Mr Dilip Walse Patil, Energy Minster, while speaking to presspersons at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The modalities of establishing the police stations, expected to have zone-wise jurisdiction, are being worked out. These stations will be of the same size as the standard police stations in the State. However, Mr Patil refused to share details about the commencement of these stations. "Right now, the police force is preoccupied with other duties, therefore, we thought of having a separate force for power theft detection. At present, our transmission and distribution (T&D) losses are 35 per cent, of which 12 per cent are due to power thefts. Even if we manage to reduce these losses by one per cent, MSEB stands to gain Rs 160 crore," Mr Patil said. The MSEB has been trying to control increasing incidence of power thefts. It has even announced cash awards for persons providing information on power thefts. However, in many cases power thefts go unreported, as it is alleged that MSEB officials are in cahoots with those involved in power thefts. The case of Bhiwandi, the `power loom town' near Mumbai, is perhaps the most notorious place in the State, quite renowned for blatant power thefts.
