Pune , May 31

THE Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate (BMSS), known in the domestic market for its premium brands of liquor, has forged a partnership with the Howling Wolves Wine Group of Australia to cater to the Indian palate.

The wine would be marketed through its group company, Baumgarten & Wallia Pvt Ltd, Mr Ashutosh Agashe, Joint Managing Director, BMSS, said.

Depending on the way the market moves, BMSS is also planning to set up a manufacturing base for wine production in the country.

Mr Vaughan Sutherland, Partner, Howling Wolves, said it would look at manufacturing semi-premium wines in the country. This would be anytime after eight months provided the Indo-Australian FTA was not signed and the current duty structure of 180 per cent comes down.

Mr Agashe said that when the manufacturing begins, the wine concentrate would be imported and the bottling would take place here.

Mr Agashe said Howling Wolves would be available in three categories with the entry brand priced upwards of Rs. 600. The premium brand Howling Wolves would be priced above Rs 900 and the super premium brand, Small Batch, above Rs 1,400 per bottle.

Mr Sutherland said his company is located on 17 hectares in the Willyabrup locality on the Margaret River. The $8-million winery built in 1998 today crushes over1,500 tonnes of fruit and produces over 1.5 million litres of premium quality wine.
