KCCI to give away awards to exporters

Mangalore , June 2

THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) will honour exporters from 20 sectors at a ceremony in Mangalore on June 4.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said that the Karnataka Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries, Mr P.G.R. Sindhia, will give away `KCCI Export Awards 2004' on that day. The Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, Mr P. Tamilvanan, will be the chief guest on the occasion.

He said that the KCCI's aim is to project Mangalore as the export hub of Karnataka.

Export from the region will get a boost with the completion of the Mangalore-Hassan railway line and the second runway at the airport.

He hoped that the completion of the railway line would help in attracting more container cargo to New Mangalore Port. At present, Kochi and Chennai are getting a major share of container cargo from Karnataka. The completion of second runway at Mangalore airport will boost floriculture industry in the region, as there is a good demand for floriculture products of coastal Karnataka in West Asia.

KCCI is planning to include service sector, including tourism industry, in the export awards in the coming years, he said.

Mr Rao said that Mr Sindhia would also speak on various aspects related to the region, including infrastructure projects and coastal special economic zone.

Mr Walter D'Souza, Chairman of the Foreign Trade Sub-Committee of KCCI, said that coastal Karnataka contributed 15 per cent to the total exports from the state. Most exports from the region belong to merchandise category.

The KCCI Vice-President, Capt J.P. Menezes, was present on the occasion.
