Reliance Industries to raise Jamnagar refinery capacity

Our Bureau

Mangalore , June 2

RELIANCE is planning to upgrade the capacity of its Jamnagar refinery from 27 million tonnes per annum to 40 MTPA.

This was disclosed by the State Head of Reliance Petro Marketing Pvt Ltd, Mr M.J. Mathews, to a select bunch of customers and franchisees at the inauguration of the Reliance petrol bunk at Kulur near Mangalore on Wednesday.

Mr Mathews said that the present rated capacity of the refinery is 27 MTPA. The capacity has been increased to 34 MTPA after removing bottlenecks in its operations.

However, neither did he mention about the probable time frame for capacity expansion nor the related investments in the proposed expansion project.

Sources in Reliance said that the manpower is being mobilised for this purpose. They hoped that the work on capacity expansion might begin soon.

It may be mentioned here that the Jamnagar facility became operational in 33 months after the contract for the construction of the petrochemical complex was awarded. Around 4,500 engineers and managers and nearly 80,000 labourers were involved in its construction. With that experience in hand it may not be impossible for the company to increase its capacity to 40 MTPA, sources said.

Mr Mathews claimed that Reliance is the only refinery producing Euro III standard fuel in the country. It can process any type of crude from any part of the world.

He said that the company has licence to set up 5,487 petrol pumps in the country.

Around 450 petrol pumps, including 27 in Karnataka, have been set up till now. The company is planning to set up around 2,000 petrol pumps during this fiscal.

Availability of quality and quantity products is the distinct feature of Reliance retail outlets, he said. In this regard, the company has invested in automation and technology, and installed `key management box' and `automated tank gauging system' at the retail outlets, he added.
