Scanty summer rains in northern Kerala districts

Our Bureau

THE northern districts of Kozhikode (-75), Kannur (-73 per cent) and Kasaragod (-67 per cent), in that order, continued their bad run with the three-month-long summer shower season even as the southwest monsoon probed the neighbourhood tantalisingly close to its `gateway' in the south.

Thiruvananthapuram (+44 per cent) and Pathanamthitta (+35 per cent) in the south had the most productive session recording `excess' rainfall while Idukki (+9 per cent), Kollam (no change), Palakkad (-2 per cent), Kottayam (-7 per cent) and Alappuzha and Wayanad (-11 per cent each) received `normal' rainfall.

Ernakulam (-34 per cent), Thrissur (-35 per cent) and Malappuram (-37 per cent) also had a rather forgettable season. The Agromet Bulletin dated June 2 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, listed the chief amounts of rainfall falling during the three days ending June 1 as follows (in cm):

May 30: Neyyattinkara - 19; Nedumangad - 16; Thiruvananthapuram City - 11; Thiruvananthapuram Airport and Alappuzha - 9 each; Perinthalmanna and Varkala - 7 each; Kochi Airport, Kollam, Kottayam and Koilandy - 6 each; and Cherthala, Konni and Kunnamkulam - 5 each.

May 31: Punalur - 3 and Aluva, Ponnani, Kodungallur and Vadakkancherry - 2 each.

June 1: Paravur and Enamackel - 5 each; Kudulu and Kunnamkulam - 4 each; Kannur, Kasaragod, Hosdurg, Manjeri, Karipur Airport and Mannarkad - 3 each; and Thodupuzha, Irikkur, Pattambi and Thrithala - 2 each.

Mean maximum temperature varied between 30°C and 33°C in various districts of the State, with Punalur recording the highest maximum of 34.0°C on June 1.

Forecast valid until the morning of Saturday spoke about the possibility of rain/thundershowers at many places in the State in all districts. Outlook for the subsequent two days did not indicate any large change.
